Rob's Story
This Sazerac pulls from both sides of the drink's lineage.
The original build leaned on cognac. The modern version became closely associated with rye. Splitting the base lets both of those traditions show up in the glass—roundness and fruit from the cognac, structure and spice from the rye.
The absinthe is applied first so the glass is ready to go—no wasted movement, no extra dilution while you are finishing the drink. It stays aromatic, not dominant.
Ingredients
Scale:
3 sprays
Absinthe
Misted into chilled glass first
0.25 oz
Turbinado syrup (2:1)
0.25 oz
Peychaud's bitters
1 oz
Cognac
1 oz
Rye whiskey
Garnish
Expressed lemon peel
Method
1
Spray 3 mists of absinthe into a chilled rocks glass and set aside.
Apply absinthe first so the glass is ready when you finish the drink — less wasted motion, less dilution.
2
Add turbinado syrup and Peychaud's bitters to a mixing glass.
3
Add cognac and rye whiskey.
4
Stir with H2O croutons for 30 to 40 rotations.
30–40 rotations5
Strain into the prepared glass.
Pro Tips
Apply absinthe first — the glass is ready when you strain, preserving aromatic lift.
Use 2:1 turbinado syrup for proper body — a thinner syrup will not carry the weight.
History
The original Sazerac used cognac; the modern American version leaned fully into rye. This build honors both.
